Winsome Diamonds and Jewellery Limited: India's Foremost Diamond Producer

Winsome Diamonds chairman, Jatin Mehta, comes from a family with over half a century's experience in the diamond industry. Mehta has extensive personal and professional experience of the trade, having founded the first publicly listed Indian diamond company, Su-Raj Diamonds (India) Limited in 1985 (Winsome Diamonds and Jewellery Limited's former name). Mehta served as chairman of the company for some 25 years. By 1995, Winsome had grown to become the largest Indian processor and exporter of Indian diamonds. Jatin Mehta has held various positions with Indian quasi-governmental organisations. He was the youngest ever chairman of the Indian Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Counsel, a role he served in until 1993.

In an industry where reputation is key, Winsome Diamonds and Jewellery Limited has established itself as a market leader. The company, via its transparent operations and professional set-up, has carved a niche for itself in the diamond and fine jewellery business, growing to become a heavyweight contender. Here are just a few of the company's achievements to date:

  • 1985: The company's incorporation. In the same year, it went on to receive the Diamontaire of the Year award, as well as receiving a Certificate of Merit for growth in its exports from the Indian government.
  • 1986: Floated its shares on the stock market.
  • 1987: Was the proud recipient of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotional Council's award for Outstanding Export Performance, as well as receiving a further Certificate of Merit for the company's non-traditional export marketing development.

The word "winsome" means attractive or charming - a prefix befitting the company's products. The company's international operations cover all aspects of diamond and jewellery manufacture; from trading in rough, unpolished stones, to selling high-end, finished products in key jewellery market locations. With its state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities, coupled with the expertise and experience of its craftsmen, Winsome Diamonds and Jewellery Limited produce some of the world's finest diamond jewellery.

Diamond's are composed entirely of carbon: the chemical elemental to all life on earth. Each natural diamond was formed long before cavemen or dinosaurs roamed the earth: the name emanating from the Greek work "adamas", which translates as unconquerable. Whilst the youngest diamond dates back some 900 million years, the oldest is estimated to be 3.2 billion years old.

Winsome Diamonds and Jewellery Limited is an offset of one of the most trusted of all global diamond franchises. The company has a legacy in the diamond industry spanning back four decades; its foundations established upon the pillars of trust, ethics, transparency, reliability and consistency.

Winsome's core business activities are the manufacture and export of polished diamonds, as well as silver, gold, and platinum jewellery. Winsome Diamonds and Jewellery Limited specialise in the diamond market, but also produce semi-precious gemstone jewellery. The company pride themselves on their facilities and quality control, coupled with ground-breaking product design.

Throughout the ages, diamonds have been admired as one of man's greatest commodities. Today, the diamond trade is a multi-billion-dollar business, although compared with the gold trade the diamond market is relatively small.

In 2010, the worldwide diamond retail market was valued at $60 billion dollars. The diamond industry is segmented into several groups:
  • Miners and producers
  • Cutters and polishers
  • Jewellery manufacture

The Most Fashionable Diamond Cut for Engagement Rings

Diamonds are synonymous with marriage, or indeed, the proposal. Round cut diamonds remain the evergreen choice. This cut is the most popular - by some 70% - for good reason. The symmetrically balanced shape of the brilliant-cut diamond offers unsurpassed light performance. Nevertheless, princess-cut, square diamonds have soared in popularity over the years. The cut dates back to the 1960s when it appeared on the market as an alternative shape to the traditional round diamond. This style offered a contemporary edge whilst continuing to show the stone off in all its sparkling brilliance.

Today in the United States, cushion cut diamonds are making waves, with dealers seeing a surge in demand for the unusual shape. Emerald cut diamonds hark back to the Art Deco period: their "hall of mirrors" effect shows off the stone’s clarity of colour to scintillating effect. Asscher-cut diamonds, the newest addition to the market, are a fusion between round and emerald cuts. The cut gives a classical appearance, whilst offering a glittering, contemporary edge to the generic, step-cut stone.
